Spring Detox: Detoxing & Liver Support

It’s out with the old and in with the new for springtime, and the same goes for toxins built up in your body, better out than in. Just like good housekeeping, there is good body keeping! Cleansing at least once a year is especially helpful, and even more supportive when done as the seasons change. Just like the temperature, the foods we eat during each season change.  As we move from spring to summer, the body is working up towards some of the busiest months of the year.

Traditionally, cultures all around the world have practiced seasonal cleansing in different ways. The liver is one of the main organs to take toxins out of the body, and is also one of the hardest working organs in our body! The liver works with other organs to detox blood, produce bile, breakdown hormones, and acts as a storage facility for our vitamins and minerals. If the liver is not functioning properly, it can effect many other areas of our body.

Some things you may notice if your liver is not performing at its best include: gas or bloating, constipation, heartburn, acid reflux, yellowish tint to skin and eyes, high blood pressure, difficulty losing weight, cognitive difficulties, dark urine, poor appetite, and chronic fatigue.

To help support your liver, there are certain foods we can focus on. These foods include beets, carrots, tomatoes, grapefruit, spinach, citrus fruits, cabbage, turmeric, avocados, apples, Brussel sprouts, garlic, dandelion root, leafy green vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, green tea, artichoke, olive oil, and alternative grains like quinoa, millet and buckwheat.

There are many diets, supplements, and programs available to cleanse your liver - and we encourage you to find the one that is best for you by muscle testing. Below are some general tips for optimal liver support:

-       Hydrate
-       Eat clean and organic
-       Exercise regularly
-       Eat good fats (like extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil and avocados)
-       Eat veggies, preferably organic. A good rule of thumb is to eat many colors to get the most micronutrients
-       Take a probiotic
-       Get the proper amount of sleep
-       Avoid alcohol and tobacco products
-       Avoid processed foods and whole grains

Most people find that when they have completed a liver cleanse, they have much more energy, improved digestion, and have brighter looking skin. Many report more mental clarity and cognitive functioning, along with a boost to the immune system and more balanced blood sugar levels.
